There are moments in our walk with God when obedience feels steady and certain. And then there are seasons when obedience feels shaky, quiet, and costly. We know what God has asked us to do, yet our feelings seem to argue against it at every turn.
Faith and feelings are not the same thing. Feelings are real, but they are not reliable. Faith, on the other hand, is a choice to trust God even when our emotions hesitate.
As we move deeper into this new year, many women are discovering that God’s call has not changed, but their confidence has wavered. This is where faith must speak louder than feelings.
Walking by Faith, Not by Sight
Scripture speaks plainly to this tension.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
2 Corinthians 5:7
Sight includes more than what we can physically see. It also includes what we feel. Our fears. Our doubts. Our insecurity. Our lack of confidence. When we rely on sight, we wait until things make sense. When we walk by faith, we move forward even when they do not.
Walking by faith does not mean ignoring fear. It means choosing obedience despite it.
When Feelings Try to Lead
Feelings are powerful. They can convince us to delay what God has already confirmed. They can whisper that we are not ready, not capable, or not enough. Feelings often tell us to wait for confidence before taking the next step.
But confidence is not the foundation of obedience. Trust is.
Throughout Scripture, God’s people often obeyed while afraid. Faith was never the absence of fear. It was the decision to trust God more than fear.
God does not require us to feel brave in order to obey Him. He asks us to trust Him.
Obedience Without Emotional Certainty
One of the hardest lessons of faith is learning that obedience does not always come with peace beforehand. Sometimes peace follows obedience, not the other way around.
When we wait for our emotions to align perfectly, we risk missing the very growth God intends for us. Faith matures when we choose to act on God’s Word rather than our emotional state.
Walking by faith means:
-
Saying yes when your heart is unsure
-
Taking the next step without seeing the full picture
-
Trusting God’s character when your feelings are unstable
Faith does not mean we are strong. It means we believe God is.
Faith Is Built Through Practice
Faith grows the same way muscles do. Through use.
Each step of obedience strengthens trust. Each moment of surrender teaches us that God is faithful. Over time, feelings begin to follow faith, but they cannot lead it.
God never promised emotional certainty. He promised His presence.
When faith leads, feelings eventually find their place.
Application
Consider where feelings may be influencing your obedience.
Ask yourself:
-
Am I delaying obedience because I do not feel confident or ready?
-
What has God already made clear that I am waiting to feel differently about?
-
What is one small step of faith I can take this week, even if my emotions resist?
Write down one area where God is inviting you to trust Him beyond your feelings. Commit it to prayer and choose obedience over comfort.
Prayer
Lord,
You know my feelings before I speak them. You see my fear, my uncertainty, and my hesitation. Help me to walk by faith and not by what I see or feel. Teach me to trust You even when my emotions are unsettled. Strengthen my obedience and quiet the voices that pull me away from Your truth. I choose to trust You, not because I feel confident, but because You are faithful.
In Jesus' Name. Amen.
