A Life Marked by Faith
Elizabeth Elliot was born Elizabeth Howard on December 21, 1926, in Brussels, Belgium. She grew up in a home filled with Christian values and a deep love for Scripture. Even as a young woman, she sensed God’s call to live a life wholly devoted to Him. She attended Wheaton College in Illinois, a place where she nurtured her spiritual formation and met like-minded peers who shared her desire to serve God.
After graduating, Elizabeth married Jim Elliot in 1953. Jim shared her passion for missions, and together they felt God’s calling to serve the Huaorani people, an unreached and isolated tribe in Ecuador. The Huaorani, known as the Auca by outsiders, had a reputation for being hostile to outsiders. Yet Elizabeth and Jim were compelled by love—love for God and love for people who had never heard the gospel.
Tragedy and Trust
In January 1956, Jim Elliot and four other missionaries were tragically killed while attempting to make contact with the Huaorani. Elizabeth, just 29 years old and newly widowed, faced a grief that would have shaken anyone’s faith. Many might have walked away from God after such loss, but Elizabeth chose a different path. She clung to the promise of God’s faithfulness.
Her response was one of remarkable courage and surrender. Instead of retreating, she returned to Ecuador just months later, with her young daughter Valerie, to continue the mission her husband had begun. She spent two years living among the Huaorani, learning their language, building relationships, and sharing the love of Christ. Through her faith and patience, many of the tribe members came to know Jesus—including some who had been directly involved in her husband’s death.
Elizabeth Elliot once said, “Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One who is leading.” Her life exemplifies this truth: trust in God does not require us to understand every step, but it calls us to surrender fully to His guidance.
Devotion in Action
