A Song of Thanksgiving After the Deliverance

When God Made a Way

Imagine standing at the edge of the sea with nowhere to go. Behind you, an army is closing in. Before you, the water stretches as far as your eyes can see. You have no boats to carry you across, no bridge to lead you to safety, and no way to escape what is coming.

What would you do?

This was the situation Moses and the Israelites found themselves in after leaving Egypt. For generations, the Israelites had lived in slavery under Pharaoh. Their days were filled with hard labor, and their cries for help had reached the ears of the Lord. God had heard their suffering and raised up Moses to lead them out of bondage.

After sending plagues upon Egypt, God finally brought His people out of the land. Imagine the relief they must have felt as they left behind the place where they had endured so much hardship. At last, they were free! They were on their way to the land God had promised their ancestors.

But their journey was far from over.

God led the Israelites toward the Red Sea, and then Pharaoh changed his mind. He gathered his chariots and soldiers and pursued them. When the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptian army approaching, fear took hold of their hearts. They were trapped between the sea and the enemy coming toward them.

They cried out to the Lord, and some questioned why Moses had brought them out of Egypt only to face such danger. Can you imagine the fear and uncertainty among the people? They had witnessed God's power in Egypt, yet now they stood before an obstacle that seemed impossible to overcome.

But God had not brought them that far to abandon them.

Moses told the people not to be afraid, to stand firm, and to see the salvation of the Lord. Then God instructed Moses to lift his staff and stretch his hand over the sea.

As Moses obeyed, the Lord sent a strong east wind that blew throughout the night. The waters divided, and the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on either side of them.

Think about what that must have been like. Families making their way across the seabed, children walking beside their parents, and an entire nation moving forward through a path that had not existed moments before. The very obstacle standing between them and safety had become the way God delivered them.

When the Israelites reached the other side, the Egyptians pursued them into the sea. But God brought the waters back, and the Egyptian army was swept away.

The danger that had once seemed so close was gone. The people who had been trapped were now standing safely on the other side.

And what did they do?

They sang.

Exodus 15 records the song of Moses and the Israelites as they praised the Lord for His mighty deliverance. Moses began with these words:

"“I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously" (Exodus 15:1).

Their song celebrated God's strength, His salvation, and His faithfulness. The Israelites had witnessed something they could never have accomplished on their own. God had made a way where there had been no way, and their hearts responded with praise.

They had cried out in fear on one side of the sea, but on the other side, they lifted their voices in thanksgiving.

Remembering to Give Thanks for Our Deliverance

There is a beautiful connection between the Israelites' story and the story we explored last week.

In Week One, we saw Noah step out of the ark onto dry ground after months of waiting. Before beginning the next chapter of his life, he built an altar to the Lord. Noah responded to God's faithfulness with worship after the storm.

Now we find the Israelites standing on dry ground, too, but their story takes us to a different kind of deliverance. They had been pursued by an enemy, trapped before an impossible obstacle, and frightened about what would happen next. Yet God brought them safely through, and they responded with a song of thanksgiving.

Both stories remind us of the importance of recognizing God's faithfulness when He brings us through difficult circumstances.

How often have we found ourselves facing something that seemed impossible? Maybe we have prayed for a way forward when every door appeared closed. Maybe we have faced a frightening diagnosis, worried about a loved one, struggled through a difficult season, or wondered how we would ever get through a particular challenge.

We may not always receive the answer we expect, and God's deliverance does not always come in the way we imagine. But we can look back over our lives and recognize moments when He provided strength, opened a door, sent encouragement through another person, or carried us through something we could not have faced alone.

And when we recognize His faithfulness, we should respond with thanksgiving.

Psalm 107:2 says, "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble". Those who have experienced God's goodness have reason to tell of it. Our stories of His faithfulness can encourage others who are still standing at the edge of their own Red Sea, wondering how they will ever make it through.

And that is one reason we should never be quick to forget what God has done. When we remember His faithfulness, our hearts have reasons to praise Him, even when the next challenge comes along.

The Israelites' journey did not end at the Red Sea. They still had a wilderness to cross and lessons to learn along the way. Their song of thanksgiving did not mean they would never face another difficulty. It meant they had witnessed the power of the God who had delivered them.

And we, too, can carry the memory of God's faithfulness into whatever lies ahead.

As we continue our journey through Seasons of Thanksgiving: A Journey of Grateful Hearts, let's remember both Noah's altar and Israel's song. When God brings us through a storm, may we pause to worship. When He makes a way through what seemed impossible, may we lift our voices in praise. And when we find ourselves facing another uncertain season, may we remember the times He has already carried us through.

We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we can always take time to thank God for His faithfulness yesterday and trust Him with whatever comes next.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving

Heavenly Father, thank You for hearing our cries and remaining faithful through every season of our lives. When we face circumstances that seem impossible, help us trust You even when we cannot see a way forward. Remind us of the times You have carried us through difficult situations, provided for our needs, and given us strength when we felt weak. Forgive us for the times we allow fear to overshadow our remembrance of Your goodness. Teach us to be people who do not forget Your faithfulness but respond with hearts full of gratitude and praise. Help us encourage others by sharing the ways You have worked in our lives, and give us faith to trust You with the challenges we face today. May our lives become a song of thanksgiving that honors You in every season. In Jesus' name, Amen.
